There is a story in the Bible that gives some very practical advice in coping with such a gamut of melancholy. It is the story in 1 Kings 19:1-8, of the prophet Elijah’s battle in dealing with the deepest low of his life. Most people, at one time or other in life can identify with Elijah. For myself, having been a person who has had some skirmishes with depression, I know that the things God used in Elijah’s life to pull him through work. Don’t you wish that when God sends a test your way that there would be some kind of warning like one of those loud pulsating alarms or a flashing light that says “This is a Test!” Knowing that would bring a heightened awareness to focus on God and respond in a way that is pleases to Him. In 1949, just months before the breakthrough crusade that launched Billy Graham’s remarkable evangelistic career he went through a personal crisis of faith that could have taken him out. Billy’s crisis of faith was not unlike the crisis of faith that every Christian at one time or other must go through. The crisis of faith at its core is wrestling with the question, “Can I trust God to be who He says He is?” And that is intricately tied to the question “Is the Bible true?”

Fear is more than just a stream of thoughts and accompanying emotion. In many cases it is a spirit. And if fear is a demonic spirit we need to treat it as such. To deal properly with fear we must speak to it as if it were a person, quoting the Scriptures and while having done so stand our ground.

Are you a mudder? A mudder is a term used to describe an athlete or a horse that performs well in adverse muddy conditions. Bottom line, being a mudder is in the genes. I don’t know any other way to describe it. If you’ve got “mudder” in your genes you’re a born overcomer.
